Surgical Spine Program |
Health Care Partners (HCP) has
a home-based program for patients recovering from spine surgery.
There are two basic types of spinal surgeries:
1. Decompression:
- Laminotomy: This procedure
removes a portion of the lamina – the bone at the back of the
spinal canal. The opening that is created by this procedure will relieve
the pressure on the nerve.
- Laminectomy: This surgery
takes the pressure off a nerve by removing the entire lamina. As part
of this procedure your surgeon may decide to make a new opening in the
spine to ease pain caused by stenosis.
- Diskectomy: In this procedure
your surgeon will remove a portion of a damaged disk. In most cases
a laminectomy must first be performed to expose the disk. Then any part
of the disk that is pressing on the nerve can be removed.
2. Fusion:
- The Spinal Fusion Procedure:
This type of surgery is used to make the spine more stable. The surgeon
will lock together (fuse) two or more vertebrae. This procedure keeps
the bones from moving and pressing on the nerves easing lower back and
leg pain.
Fusion surgery can be done using several different methods. Talk with
your surgeon about the steps chosen for your operation.

| HOW
CAN HEALTH CARE PARTNERS IMPROVE YOUR RECOVERY?
|
Exercise
THE PRIMARY STEP TO A SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY
|
 |
A customized exercise
program is designed to improve activity and ensure safety in the home environment.
Proper use of medical equipment and assistive devices will be reviewed according
to individual needs.
|
Mobility
ESSENTIAL TO AN ACTIVE LIFE |
Our multi-disciplinary
staff helps you through the post surgical process. We provide instruction
on increasing strength with activity/walking, body mechanics and positioning.
|
Pain Management
THE KEY TO ACTIVE PARTICIPATION DURING REHAB
|
Pain inhibits your ability to
fully participate in physical therapy over the course of a four to eight
week recovery.
HCP staff will provide education to help decrease pain and improve your
activities of daily living. Your physician and physical therapist will work
with you to develop a plan to relieve pain and speed recovery.
|
Education
AN EDUCATED PATIENT IS A HEALTHY PATIENT |
| It is critical for the patient
to play an active role in the healing process. HCP will guide and assist
you in the recognition of post-operative complications. A successful recovery
involves a well informed patient |
